Standards

Umpire Expectations

  • Arrive Early — Be at the field at least 15 minutes before game time. Check in at tournament headquarters before your first game.
  • Professional Appearance — Wear a proper official umpire uniform: umpire polo shirt, proper pants, black shoes, chest protector, shin guards, and facemask. Looking professional is extremely important.
  • Know the Rules — Review the rules for each game and age level before you step on the field. Rules can vary between associations and tournaments.
  • Proper Mechanics — Use proper NFHS-approved mechanics. Don't change your style just because it's youth baseball — every game is an important game for these players.
  • Communication — If you're going to be late or need to cancel, contact your assignor immediately. Any communication is better than none.
  • Cancellation Policy — Cancel assignments at least 72 hours in advance. Inside 72 hours, you are responsible for finding your own replacement. All cancellations must be approved by your assignor.
  • Professionalism — Keep comments about players, coaches, and spectators to yourself. Verbalize only positive comments. Be professional in all situations.
  • Incident Reporting — Report any ejections or conduct-related incidents to your assignor within 24 hours.
  • Injured Players — Let the coach and/or on-site trainer handle injured players. Do not assist the player yourself — get help.

About TCMABL
The Twin City Men's Adult Baseball League (TCMABL) was founded in 1997 as a Minnesota non-profit. It is a MABL & MSBL National Member league with three age divisions: 18+, 25+, and 35+. Website: tcmabl.com

Fee Schedule
18+ Division (Double Header): $115 total — each team pays the umpire fees for one game of the doubleheader.
25+ & 35+ Divisions: $170 per game — teams split (50%) the umpire fees for their single game.
Teams must pay the umpire fee at or before the pre-game home plate meeting.

Divisions & Age Requirements
18+ Division: Players must be 18 or older. Games are 7 innings regular season, 9 innings playoffs.
25+ Division: Players must turn 25 or older during the calendar year of the season.
35+ Division: Players must turn 35 or older during the calendar year of the season.
All games are 9 innings for the 25+ and 35+ divisions. Playoff games are always 9 innings.

Game Rules — Key Points for Umpires
Equipment: Only wood bats are allowed (plain solid wood, composite, laminated, or plastic-coated). All batters and runners must wear helmets; all catchers must wear full gear (helmet, chest protector, shin guards).

Mercy Rule: 10-run mercy rule after 7th inning (or 4½ innings if home team leads) in a 7-inning game; after 7th inning in a 9-inning game. Playoffs: 15-run mercy after 7th inning.

Eight Man Start Rule: A team may play with 8 players. A late-arriving player cannot take the field, bat, or run until the current half-inning is complete. A team may not play with fewer than 8.

Forfeits: Grace period is 15 minutes after scheduled start. If a team forfeits Game 1 of a doubleheader, the forfeiting team pays full umpire fees and gets an extra hour to find more players for Game 2 (which becomes 9 innings, fees split).

Cancelled Games: If a game is cancelled before game time, the home manager must notify the umpire at least 1 hour before game time. Failure to notify means the home team is responsible for umpire fees and travel costs.

No Collision Rule: Players must slide or go around a fielder who has (or is about to receive) the ball. A runner who intentionally collides to jar the ball loose is out and may be ejected. Catchers may not block the plate without possession.

Intentional Walks: All four pitches must be thrown (MLB rule).

Hit Batsmen: If a pitcher hits 4 batters in one game, the opposing team may require his removal as pitcher. The umpire may eject any pitcher intentionally throwing at a batter at any time.

Courtesy Runners: 2 per team per game, must be designated on the lineup card as “non-runners” before the game.

Conduct & Ejections
Ejections result in an automatic one-game suspension (served in the team's next game — or Game 2 if ejected from Game 1 of a doubleheader). Neither the opposing manager nor another umpire can waive this suspension. All ejections should be reported to the TCMABL Board of Directors.

Field Maintenance
No alcoholic beverages are permitted at fields before, during, or after games. No climbing fences or cutting locks. Teams hitting drills against fences is prohibited. Post-game: Home team rakes/tarps mound and home plate, drags infield, cleans up litter. Visiting team cleans their own dugout.

Season
Opening Day: May 17, 2026. Regular season runs through summer; playoffs determined by regular season record.
