Standards

Umpire Expectations

  • Arrive Early — Be at the field at least 15 minutes before game time.
  • Professional Appearance — Wear a proper umpire uniform at all times. Looking professional is extremely important.
  • Know the Rules — Review the rules for each game and age level. Softball rules can vary between associations.
  • Communication — Contact your assignor immediately if you will be late or need to cancel.
  • Incident Reporting — Report any ejections or conduct-related incidents to your assignor within 24 hours.

Uniform & Equipment Requirements

  • Shirt — Umpire polo shirt (check with your assignor for association color preference)
  • Pants — Proper umpire pants
  • Shoes — Black athletic or umpire shoes
  • Protective Equipment — Chest protector, shin guards, facemask/helmet required for plate umpires.
  • Ball/Strike Indicator — Bring your own clicker indicator to every game.

Softball Umpire FAQ

Contact your assignor as soon as possible. Cancellations must be made at least 72 hours in advance. Inside 72 hours, you are responsible for finding your own replacement.
